Silk Scarves from the looms of Isan

The uniqueness of these scarves is the Floating Ikat weave, “invented” by a Singaporean, Mr Percy Vatsaloo after he spent many months observing the works of the traditional weavers in Baan Mai Roong, situated in north-eastern Thailand.

Percy combined the two old weaving techniques known to Baan Mai Roong tribes – the Ikat and Supplementary Weft. Ikat involves patterning the thread by tying and dyeing sections of it in different colours; and Supplementary Weft is the weaving supplementary threads into the fabric, creating a raised pattern.

Each piece is contemporary in looks, colours and design, and no two pieces are alike. And when you buy an Isan scarf you also helping to raise the living standards and self-esteem of these simple folks involved in Percy’s weaving project. ARTICA regularly updates its collection with fresh pieces from the loom.
